If you put any instrument in the proper musician's hands, the results
will sound good. However, the proper instrument in any musician's
hands can sound fantastic. I build my mandolins based upon this
idea.
Living in northern Vermont, I am lucky to have an abundance of native
maple and red spruce available to me. In fact, there are two different
tone wood suppliers within a twenty minute drive of my workshop.
This allows me hand pick through literally hundreds of billets of
wood to find pieces of wood that are perfectly suited for the projects
I am working on.
The
mandolins I build are designed for the people who are going to be
playing them. The styles of music you play, the techniques which
you use, and the environments in which you play are all carefully
considered when you order an instrument from me. Only after knowing
this information can I begin to design an instrument around you.
Body style, wood selection, scale length, arching, neck/body joint,
finish and ornamentation can all be tailored to meet your needs.
All
of the instruments pictured on this site are of my own design, with
few exceptions. They are not copies of Lyon & Healy's or Gibson's.
They are unique instruments crafted for individuals. What I have
done is taken design elements from some of the great makers and
manufacturers that I admire and put them in conjunction with my
own ideas. The results are mandolins that are elegant, well balanced,
and perfectly suited for the modem player.
